Yesterday was, thankfully, a busy day for us. I love a busy Valentine’s Day. And we finished delivering a lot of gifts and flowers just after dark. There were only two mistakes and those could be and were corrected before nightfall. Yes!

As I was driving around making some deliveries, I realized that my staff needs some attention! We made IT through the day, got IT all done, but IT could have been done better, more efficiently, and more effectively. And the thought of making IT better, makes my blood pressure skyrocket and my heart race. There is nothing more stressful than managing the people that work in my business. But when those people have been managed well, IT makes work a breeze and enjoyable for all.

So where to start: making sure everything from keys to printer paper are where they belong, that we all have the same process for completing orders, and that the follow up procedures are consistent from the top (me) down. And I must work with my employees enough to make sure that they are following my procedures and see that they actually do work most of the time. I love a good system. I love a system that works like a well oiled machine. And until we can get the feel of a well oiled machine, I’ll continue to suffer from the stress of managing people.

I spent an entire day right at the end of the year (December 30 to be exact) cleaning out my office. I didn’t want to start the new year in a disaster zone or behind, so I felt like the time was worth it. It took a LOT longer than I thought. But it’s done now and I am so relieved. Papers are filed, notebooks are organized, files are purged and best of all there is a stack of brand new legal pads waiting for ideas, lists, inspirations, notes–potential.

Today has been a good start to my 2011 work year. The office is quiet because my student workers don’t come back until Monday and I hope to have some productive thinking and planning time until then.

Leaving town and leaving children behind with a grandparent is a lot of work! Will this trip be worth it? Most definitely yes, but I imagine I will be exhausted the first 24 hours after leaving. Our flight leaves tomorrow at 1:30–we’ll leave here about 11:00ish to get to the airport, through security, etc. with time to spare. So, I have 24 hours to get my children’s activities, schedules and information organized for my mother in law, a multitude of errands run, sing at a funeral, teach choir, and get a lot work done and even more organized for my employees while I’m gone. This trip overlaps with a huge work weekend for us–there aren’t many, but this would be one of them.

This is definitely one of those days when I’d like to be a Walmart greeter–I’d be so good at that–and I could just walk away from my work, worry free. And did I mention that our house is a mess?

I recently added a chair to my home office. I have a nice leather office chair and because my office has been purely about function, I haven’t had any other seating in here. If the girls came into visit or ask a question, they invariable began to pull on my chair, touch things, move things, and otherwise DRIVE ME NUTS!!! A friend gave me a set of club chairs that she received from a friend. These chairs wouldn’t work in her house and she gave them to me. I haven’t had time to reupholster them, but one of these chairs has been a wonderful addition to the office. Now, when the girls come in, they can sit in the chair. Occasionally, one of them will bring a book into the office and read while I work. They have a comfortable place to wait quietly while I finish up a phone call. I am fussing a lot less than before and enjoying making them part of my working world.

So, I’ve been super stressed lately. It’s just that time of year. And I’ve noticed that I cannot use my planner right now. I’m one of those dorky people who loves a new legal pad, new office supplies of all kinds, and every now and then I like to try a new calendar system. So, I’ve used a Palm Pilot and the computer software. I’ve used Outlook. I’ve used a Daytimer. But for the last four years, I’ve used a Planner Pad. I LOVE this thing! It’s perfect. . . but I can’t use it when I’m stressed–severely stressed like now. I have never been able to use any type of calendar system when I’m severely stressed out. What is up with that? It seems I can only operate using a list.

My mom is coming today and that will be nice. . .a break in the routine and she is taking two of the three children to spend the weekend with her. I am looking forward to some one-on-one time with my oldest daughter. I’m hoping she can help me with a few projects around the house and then maybe we can just hang out at home. She is a lot of fun and really good company. A good weekend in the making for sure!

I’m almost paralyzed with the amount of time on my hands today. I realize it’s the same amount of time I had yesterday and the day before, but today, the time is all mine! The girls are at Paul’s mother’s house, Paul is at work, and I am home alone! To work or not to work…that is the question. Maybe the larger question is when to work. I already worked a little bit this morning reporting to a seller on a very successful open house. I’ve done some research on the Five Points housing market and reported it to another seller and made a to-do list for the day.

I think when I walk today I won’t take my cell phone – wow! That’s living dangerously! It’s not the safety issue, but the accessibility issue. I get tired of feeling like I am chained to my Blackberry. With three email addresses to manage, it vibrates ALL the time!

Bones doesn’t seem to be stressed out today and that’s good. Actually, I don’t think that Bones understands stress at all. He’s had a wonderful breakfast of chicken, rice and chicken broth and he is sacked out under my desk for at least the next six hours. Oh, to be a dog!

So today seems to be shaping up like this: walk, online class, work with printer, submit business proposal to CLC and Greek Licensing, order product for Fall Semester, work on benefit concert for Interfaith Hospitality Network and continue to respond to football parking customers for girls’ school. Very productive day shaping up!

Just me and Bones here. I love this time when the only sound I hear in my house is the dog snoring. I had a profound moment of thought this morning: I love that my children are growing up! So many parents moan and groan that their children are growing up too fast, they want a baby in the house, etc. OK, so I can admit that at times, I miss rocking a little baby to sleep, but I don’t miss all that comes with that little baby. One of the reasons I am glad my children are growing up is that we had a dinner at our house last night with about 25 guests – a day of preparation for me (no mommy to entertain the kiddos) and guests staying until 10:30 pm – and the kids could handle it! I think I finally got the children in the bed at 11:00 p.m. Remember they are 10, 8, and 5 – finally old enough to be party guests. I was so proud and glad not to be so schedule driven. Late bedtimes are definitely not the norm – not even on the weekend and especially not when school is in session – but it was a nice, occasional occurrence, and it was fun! And, no, we weren’t planning on going to church today because Paul’s mother is here. She is leaving with the girls this morning and they will spend few days at her house. Yippee!!!

These next few days will mark the first time in several (actually more like 6-8) months that Paul and I will be home alone! It’s almost like a vacation – but, of course, I have to work and so does he! But it will be a nice break from preparing (I had typed “fixing” and realized my Southerness was coming through) breakfast and lunch. I have a pretty good attitude about making breakfast, but I LOATHE lunch! I don’t like to make it, eat it, etc. for myself so you can imagine that my feelings for the children’s lunch are about the same. So. . .yippy skippy, I don’t have to make lunch for anybody for three days!

Rise and shine again this morning–5:22 on the clock and I’ve actually been up for a while. I finished two massive projects yesterday and decided that the sense of accomplishment that comes from seeing a project through to the end is exhilarating. I also hope it’s motivating because I have a few less-massive things that need to be accomplished today.

Our oldest daughter has been at my parents’ for a few days. She and her grandmother went school supply shopping together and just hung. I must admit I’m a little jealous on several fronts. First, I miss being a granddaughter. My grandmothers in particular were very different, but I enjoyed each of them. My father’s mother died when I was in elementary school, but she was so much fun. She played with us and made the most wonderful spend the night memories at her house. I can remember those times like yesterday and I can remember how it felt to be with her. My mother’s mother was a hoot, but she wasn’t into small children. As I grew older, she became a source of wisdom and friendship for me. She died when I was in my early 30s and I can remember the feeling of being with her also. Secondly, I would love to hang out with my parents for a few days with no to-do list or agenda. It would be really nice!

Tonight is “Meet the Teacher” at the girls’ school. I’ve got my fingers crossed but these type of things usually work themselves out. I know one thing for sure: It will be hot and I’d bet at least a $100 that the air conditioning will be broken. But I don’t think the heat will squelch the excitement from all the students tonight.

It will be nice at the end of the long, hot day to have all three of my children asleep in their beds in our house. We’ve had a great summer and I wish it was a little longer, but this will be the first time in a good while that we’ve all been home together. That makes this mama very happy.

It’s a curse. I am an early riser. I woke up at 5:19 this morning and couldn’t go back to sleep so I am bound and determined to make the most of this early morning silence. I’ve checked in on Facebook and looked through CNN.com and AJC.com. Seems as if nothing earth shattering has happened overnight. So where to start in this morning’s mental and physical piles of to-do’s.

At the beach on our yearly vacation I began to see the possibilities of a new business forming one afternoon when I wasn’t really into a book. I had finished about five on our trip at that point and was plowing through the Elizabeth Taylor Vanity Fair. It was hot and I went to sit in the water and found my mind wandering. Totally blank – this rare feeling was so nice and relaxing. Well, we’ve been home from the beach almost two weeks now and this new business is actually happening. I forgot how involved a new business can be! The focus of this business is licensed collegiate merchandise and the process with the CLC is long and detailed. I am not a detail person (more big picture) and I am struggling! So, I guess that is at the top of my to-do list – at least until 8:30 when the children wake up.

If you’ve made it through the first two paragraphs, hopefully you have surmised that I am actually part of a “we”. “We” are a family of five. Me, my husband and three girls ages 10, 8, and 5. My work is done at home in an office off our living room. It’s not a totally ideal situation–working at home is great, but there are downsides, too. However, one of the upsides is that the girls can hang at home during the summer. We haven’t all been home together for about a month–so we really only have a few weeks left before school starts (way too early!) to enjoy being home together. I must confess that I (even at age 40) can’t get myself off a school-type calendar, internally speaking. I find that by May I am just over it – over lunches, over folders, over bedtimes and in need of life without a schedule. And secretly, this also applies to my work life though not quite as badly. Is there something wrong with wanting 12 weeks off from work, from life? While school starts back for them August 9, by Labor Day, I should be back in the swing of things, mentally speaking.
